Black Buffalo is #10 in Pouchrated's editors' order (5.0/10). It makes dip-style pouches from barn-cured leafy greens and pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, with no tobacco leaf or stem, aimed at adults who use traditional dip. It scores last because it has one strength (about 11.25 mg), 3 flavors, about 16 pouches per can at roughly 34 cents each, and no FDA marketing order.
21+ only. WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. Black Buffalo is not FDA-approved to help anyone quit smoking or dipping. If you don't use nicotine, don't start.
This review is based on Black Buffalo's website and FAQ, company and trade press announcements, and FDA records as of September 25, 2026. We did not buy or use Black Buffalo products.
Black Buffalo at a glance
Black Buffalo is different from the other pouches we rank. Most are white, tobacco-free nicotine pouches. Black Buffalo describes its pouches as a smokeless tobacco alternative "made of barn cured leafy greens, food-grade ingredients, and pharmaceutical-grade nicotine," manufactured in North Carolina. The company says it uses tobacco-derived nicotine but "no actual tobacco leaf or stem." It also sells long cut (loose) products and a nicotine-free ZERO line, which we don't rate.
On May 27, 2026, ITG Brands announced it had acquired Black Buffalo for $150 million in initial consideration, plus deferred payments tied to performance. ITG is the US business of Imperial Brands.
Strength
Black Buffalo's FAQ says its pouches contain "approximately 11.25 mg of total nicotine per pouch." The company says it offers products with nicotine and products without nicotine, and no reduced-strength options in between.
One strength earns a 5/10 on strength range, the lowest in our ranking. Note that "total nicotine per pouch" may not be directly comparable with the mg labels other brands use, and we haven't tested how any pouch feels. See strongest nicotine pouches for how labels compare.
Flavors
Black Buffalo sells three pouch flavors on its site:
- Wintergreen
- Mint (peppermint and spearmint, per the brand)
- Straight (described as a straight tobacco-style taste)
There's also a sampler pack. Three flavors scores 5/10 on flavor range. These are dip-style flavors; there are no fruit or coffee options.
Price and value
| Item | Price | Pouches | Per pouch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-can roll, official site | $27.45 | ~80 | ~$0.34 |
| Per can (5-can roll ÷ 5) | ~$5.49 | ~16 | ~$0.34 |
Black Buffalo says there are "approximately 16 pouches per can" in its FAQ. It wasn't listed at Nicokick when we checked, and its site sells pouches in 5-can rolls, so we divide the roll price by five, as our method allows. At about 34 cents a pouch it scores 5/10 on value, close to Lucy as the priciest per pouch we track.
FDA status
Black Buffalo is not on FDA's authorized pouch list as of August 21, 2026. According to Convenience Store News, Black Buffalo "electronically filed PMTAs for its five long cut and three pouches smokeless tobacco alternative products" on September 9, 2020. ITG's acquisition announcement doesn't mention the applications' status, and we found no public update.
Black Buffalo was not part of FDA's 2025 pouch pilot program, so it scores 5/10 on regulatory standing.
Black Buffalo vs white nicotine pouches
If you use traditional dip, Black Buffalo is built to resemble it more closely than the white pouches from ALP, FRE or Juice Head. Those brands offer far more choice:
- More strengths: ALP has 3 to 12 mg, FRE 3 to 15 mg.
- More flavors: ALP lists 15, ZAR 10.
- Lower price per pouch: Juice Head is about 16 cents at Nicokick vs Black Buffalo's 34.
Whichever format you choose, FDA says no tobacco or nicotine product is safe. See are nicotine pouches safe?
Where to buy Black Buffalo
Black Buffalo sells 5-can rolls and a sampler on its own site, marketed to adults 21+, and it has a store locator for local shops. Its affiliate program is listed as active on the FlexOffers network; Black Buffalo's own site doesn't link to it. See where to buy nicotine pouches online.
How to use Black Buffalo
Place one pouch between your lip and gum as you would other pouches, don't swallow it, and throw it in the trash afterward. See how to use nicotine pouches. Keep cans away from children and pets; if a child swallows one, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
How Black Buffalo scores
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flavor range | 5 | 3 flavors (4 or fewer scores 5) |
| Strength range | 5 | 1 level: ~11.25 mg |
| Value | 5 | ~$5.49 per can (5-can roll ÷ 5) ÷ ~16 pouches ≈ $0.34 |
| Regulatory standing | 5 | PMTA filed Sept 2020, outside FDA's pilot program |
| Overall | 5.0 | Average of the four |
The full rubric is on the about page. Our method measures choice, price and FDA standing, so a single-strength, dip-style product scores low even if it suits a specific buyer.
Who Black Buffalo suits, and who should skip it
- Consider Black Buffalo if you're an adult who uses traditional dip and specifically wants a leafy-green, dip-style pouch without tobacco leaf, in wintergreen, mint or straight.
- Skip Black Buffalo if you want a lower strength (see beginner picks), a white nicotine pouch with more flavors (ALP), or a lower price per pouch (Juice Head).
What we couldn't verify
- The current stage of Black Buffalo's 2020 PMTAs.
- The exact pouch count: Black Buffalo's FAQ says "approximately 16."
- Whether the FlexOffers affiliate listing will continue under ITG Brands' ownership. Black Buffalo's site doesn't mention an affiliate program.
- Single-can pricing on the official site, which lists pouches in 5-can rolls.
Verdict
Black Buffalo is a niche pick: a dip-style pouch without tobacco leaf, now backed by Imperial's ITG Brands. On our scoring, one strength, three flavors and a high per-pouch price put it last. Adults who want a conventional white pouch have better-rated options, starting with ALP. See the full ranking.
